LIMBO-STUDIO
An abstract of the city of
Volos, and more specifically, the waterfront area which extends between Xerias River
and Krafsidonas River, is seen as a site in an ‘in-between state’. The area is
regarded as a semi alive-semi dead part of the city, which has remained inactive
and almost out of the focus of interest of all public activities through the
years. The particular site constitutes a kind of space in a constant ‘state of waiting’,
as if being in a state of ‘limbo’*,
in an ‘invisible’ state compared to the rest of the city. Although defunct and
forgotten, the area has developed into an abandoned landscape characterized by
its fluctuating borders, as if being a kind of ‘drifting’ earth. The aim of the
studio is to propose a contemporary urban infrastructure and a housing program
for the area that will attempt to establish a new relationship with the city.
*Limbo can be defined as:
“Somewhere between here and there.”
“Not quite in Heaven but not in Hell either.”
“Not quite in Heaven but not in Hell either.”
“In games, primarily in roleplaying, limbo
refers to the state a character is in while awaiting an action of another
character.”
“A timeless void.”
“A timeless void.”
“In Dante's Inferno, Limbo is the first circle
of hell.”
“It is a place of shared consciousness by all
dreamers or a shared dream state.”
“A place in a video game where
you cannot get out of without shutting the console off.”
