LIMBO-STUDIO

An abstract of the city of Volos, and more specifically, the waterfront area which extends between Xerias River and Krafsidonas River, is seen as a site in an ‘in-between state’. The area is regarded as a semi alive-semi dead part of the city, which has remained inactive and almost out of the focus of interest of all public activities through the years. The particular site constitutes a kind of space in a constant ‘state of waiting’, as if being in a state of ‘limbo’*, in an ‘invisible’ state compared to the rest of the city. Although defunct and forgotten, the area has developed into an abandoned landscape characterized by its fluctuating borders, as if being a kind of ‘drifting’ earth. The aim of the studio is to propose a contemporary urban infrastructure and a housing program for the area that will attempt to establish a new relationship with the city.

*Limbo can be defined as:

“Somewhere between here and there.”
“Not quite in Heaven but not in Hell either.”
“In games, primarily in roleplaying, limbo refers to the state a character is in while awaiting an action of another character.”
“A timeless void.”
“In Dante's Inferno, Limbo is the first circle of hell.”
“It is a place of shared consciousness by all dreamers or a shared dream state.”
“A place in a video game where you cannot get out of without shutting the console off.”
